Chapter Ten

An hour later, Sin’s mind still hadn’t shut down. He surveyed his shadowed bedroom. His gaze followed the straight lines of the chest drawer, the smooth surface along the top, all the while doing his best to ignore the incessant tugging inside his chest. The one that nagged at him to barge back out into the hall and into Aydin’s room.

Leave it alone. He chided himself. You’ve already done enough by sending the shifter mixed signals. You’re not helping matters.

He wasn’t doing himself or Aydin any favors by starting something he couldn’t finish. Sin had to get back on the road. Yet the pain he’d witnessed in Aydin’s eyes...

Fuck.

Rolling over, he punched the pillow before settling back down. During that moment in the hallway, he’d wanted to grab Aydin and hold him more than he’d wanted his next breath. Sin, better than anyone, could understand that kind of hurt. The kind that didn’t go away no matter how many days or years flipped by on the calendar. But he sure as hell wasn’t the right person to help Aydin heal. Hell, he wasn’t even certain who had more issues, him or Aydin. So Sin had pushed away—turned away—before they’d gone any further.

Yeah. The whole damn thing sucked bigger than a pimple on a boar hog’s ass. But even if he could stay, he wasn’t what Aydin needed in his life. Sin carried way too much baggage to be good for anyone. Maybe at another time, another place, things could have been different.

Sighing, he closed his eyes and forced his body to relax. Breathe. Just breathe.

“Do you have a shot?” The question pierced through his earpiece. Sin studied the cross hairs inside his scope aimed at a window five hundred yards out. A dark male paced inside the room, the trigger for a bomb he’d strapped across his chest in his hand. Sin’s pulse ticked away like a metronome inside his head. Slow and steady. Armed and ready to blow, the terrorist inside the apartment building had chosen a family of five’s home to make his stand.

Of course he couldn’t just blow his damn self up for whatever god or cause he served, he had to take as many innocent men, women, and children with him. Fucking bastard.

“Almost,” Sin whispered into his com, his finger hovering over the trigger of his rifle. “Come on, you bastard. Show me your face.”

Suddenly, the terrorist came to halt, wildly gesturing at the others in the room. But the majority of the bomber remained obscured out of sight. Sin couldn’t take a chance with anything other than a headshot or he risked detonating the bomb. When he dropped the bastard, Sin had to make sure it was a kill shot. No part of the asshole could be left still kicking.

“That’s right,” Sin whispered. “Now take two more steps.” As if his target had heard his instructions, he stepped into view. Sin’s finger tightened against the trigger, but then the terrorist bent over, retrieving something. He straightened, lifting the package to block his own face, and pivoted toward the window.
